Glenrothes Cricket Club’s 2nd XI started the season with a home game against Edinburgh side Marchmont 2nd XI. Skipper Morrison lost the first toss of the season and the Glens were put in to bat.
Opener’s Morrison and Sampson got things off to a steady start before Morrison was adjudged LBW, Muir followed soon after without troubling the scorer. Georgeson and Sampson then took the attack to the Marchmont bowlers pusing the score to 85 before Sampson went 3 short of a half century. That’s where the Glenrothes collapse began, going from 85 for 2 to 102 all out in a matter of overs.
Glenrothes came out to filed knowing fine well they would have to bowl especially tight to defend the low total that they had amassed. They certainly did that with Marchmont’s top order crumbling at Georgeson’s feet. Georgeson bowled his 9 over allocation taking 5 wickets in the process and the score was 38 for 6 when he finished his spell. Some indifferent bowling and some good batting shots pulled 10 man Marchmont towards the total they required. By the time the 8th wicket fell Glens looked to have done enough for victory until the Marchmont batsman set about the attack hitting 4 boundaries in 2 overs. This left Morrison bowling to the in form batsman who was 46 not out and needing only 2 runs to win. The batsman decided to go for a boundary and missed the ball, Morrison bowling him for an excellent opening day victory. Special mention to debutants Matthew and Callum Kirk whos fielding all day was excellent, they never let their heads go down in the heat of the battle. Glens face another Edinburgh side Leith Franklin Beige this weekend again at home and will be hoping to add to this impressive victory.
