Glenrothes CC founding member John Bell has decided to retire from playing cricket for the club, bringing to a close his amazing 57 year career.

Aged 71, John turned out this season for GCC 5th XI, ensuring he played at the clubs new Gilvenbank home on the main square at least once. This makes him the only player to have represented the club at all our home grounds, yet another statistic for JB which is unlikely ever to be matched.

A remarkable fact that many may not know is that John was a founder of the club in 1957 at the age of just 14. His dedication to the club over the years has seen him take on the role of Match Secretary 17 times, Club Secretary 3 times and Club President 11 times. He was also Club Captain on 5 occasions.

On the playing side; with the ball John has taken 1947 wickets in 1st XI at an average of 10.88, a best of 9 for 23 and sits at number 1 in club’s all-time bowling rankings. Whilst with the bat he’s scored 7,691 for the 1st XI at an average of 13.59 with a best of 111 and sits at number 3 in the club’s all-time batting rankings.

John commented; "This decision has been difficult because I think everyone knows how much I love the game, but time and body are no respecters of personal ambition or ability. The club is currently in its healthiest ever state with a growing membership of all ages and abilities - a great time to take up or be playing cricket. That's irony I suppose!"

He continued; "This doesn't mean I am turning my back on the club. I'll still be looking after the ground and with the valuable assistance of Chris Yarwood intend to keep cutting, rolling and painting for the foreseeable future".

Club Chairman Eddie Gibbs said; "John Bell has set records at Glenrothes Cricket Club which in all likelihood will never be matched, a one-club player since 1957 and absolutely dedicated on and off the field. I'm sure it's been an absolute honour for every player associated with the club to have taken to the field with John, his bowling even in recent times has been as good as any of his contemporaries, scooping the 2nd XI bowling award as recently as 2011. There will be a distinctly odd feel to not seeing John in his whites again but we're all delighted he intends to continue with his work at the ground and wish him a happy and healthy retirement from the game".

John Bell became the very first inductee to the GCC Hall of Fame when it was launched in 2011, please click here to read more about his amazing achievements.
