One of Scotland’s greatest ever cricketers and former captain of the national team Ryan Watson will play for Glenrothes CC during the 2012 season.

Watson who made 194 appearances for Scotland, a national record he shares with former teammate Craig Wright; retired from the game at the end of the 2011 season to focus on business interests with his new recruitment company.

During the close season, through mutual business interests, Watson struck up a friendship with Glenrothes Cricket Club Chairman Edward Gibbs; and as one thing lead to another Watson agreed to delay his retirement and play several matches as a guest for Glenrothes in ESCA Division 1 during the 2012 season.

Gibbs commented; “We’ve put a lot of time and effort into recruiting new players during the close season and whilst that’s generally gone very well, to have a Scottish cricketing legend such as Ryan Watson playing as a guest for us this season is quite simply a massive honour for the club.”

“Ryan is Scotland’s most prolific run scorer and has been a superb asset for Scottish cricket and also SNCL side Forfarshire CC over many years. We are very thankful to Ryan for agreeing to play as an occasional special guest for Glenrothes CC and all the lads are buzzing for a chance to play and learn from him; this news has given us all a monumental boost ahead of the new season”.

It is likely that Ryan will make his debut for Glenrothes CC 1st XI when they take on Watsonians 2nd XI in the season opener on 28 April in Edinburgh.
