Changes to playing conditions for 2023

The Strathmore and Perthshire Cricket Union (SPCU) Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held at Strathmore Cricket Club in Forfar on Sunday.

Some of the key issues discussed included:

  • Reminder to all clubs on the need to engage with the review and overhaul of governance and delivery approaches at Cricket Scotland in response to the independent review of racism
  • Two new clubs are joining the SPCU in 2023 - Crescent from Aberdeen and Broomhall in Fife
  • All clubs are encouraged to use coloured clothing in SPCU matches if possible but ideally by 2025, with the aim of modernising the game and encourage more people to take the sport up
  • All matches in the SPCU will use pink balls from this season, aligned with the aim of wearing coloured clothing (red balls cannot be seen when players wear dark clothing) and there is potential to move to white balls in the future (which would necessitate black sightscreens etc)
  • Games will start at 12pm unless there is a ground availability issue or both teams agree to a change back to a 1pm start, though we do recognise the challenges this brings to those with work and social commitments on Saturday mornings
  • The league reconstruction of combining the old Divisions 1 and 2 into a single consolidated level played across two mixed pools was voted down by the majority of clubs (on the basis of the wide variation in playing standards, concerns over player safety, impact on promotion, integrity of clubs in fielding appropriate teams and not floating players between teams unduly etc) so reworked division 1 and 2 structures will need to be determined by the SPCU

The changes being implemented by the SPCU are focused on enhancing the appeal of cricket to attract more people into the game, and keep existing players as engaged as possible.

Hopefully all at Glenrothes Cricket Club will engage positively with the changes and help grow the game within our club and across the wider cricket family.
