Glenrothes 131-9 v 133-3 Perth Doo'cot 2s

Wednesday saw the return of the 2 Counties Cup to Gilvenbank Park with Perth Doo’cot 2nd XI the visiting side.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Reyon Thomas and Jay Lewis opened for Glenrothes. Thomas was first to fall for 4 to opening bowler Armstrong, while Lewis looked to be in good form until he fell for 11 to a ball the kept low from McDermott.

This brought Sufyan Ahmed and Mayank Sautiyal to the crease who both looked to be positive from the outset with Sautiyal hitting a massive six over midwicket. Unfortunately, he went for one shot too many, skying the ball off McDermott’s bowling.

This brought Captain Chris Marshman to the crease and whilst Marshman struggled to get going, Ahmed accelerated, depositing McDermott for three consecutive sixes before being bowled of the first ball by Ali for a well-made 34.

Keeper Paul Culleton was in at seven but would leave without troubling the scorers after walking when nicking Razzak behind. Marshman would then follow after he skied the ball to Ferguson at mid off for 27. Qasim Ahmad played well at 8 and marshalled the tail to finish on 26 not out, giving Glenrothes 131 to defend. This was lower than they may have hoped earlier in the innings but was certainly a defendable total.

Lewis would open the bowling with Sautiyal, however, neither were able to apply any pressure as Perth started well, scoring 20 from the first four overs. Marshman then brought himself and Thomas into the attack to try and stem the flow of runs which would prove to work as Marshman dismissed opposite number Ferguson after he nicked the ball to Culleton behind.

Ahmad would also bowl well maintaining the pressure on the Perth batsmen, while young Ben Krzyzanowski bowled with good pace. However, Perth were able to pick up singles at will and ultimately some lack lustre fielding would prove to be decisive. Despite Lewis returning well to pick up two quick wickets, Perth would go on to hit the winning runs in the final over with Ali having scored a well constructed 74.

While Glenrothes will certainly feel that they were 20 runs short of where they thought they would have got to at one point, it was certainly they’re fielding that let them down. However, it was a close game played in good spirits and we look forward to welcoming Perth back to Gilvenbank Park on Saturday for our league fixture.
