Glenrothes 3rd XI made their long‑awaited debut in the SPCU Recreational & Development League, and the day couldn’t have been hosted better. Arbroath set the tone with a perfect example of how an R&D fixture should be played - competitive, welcoming, and focused on development.
Arbroath won the toss and chose to bat, mixing youth and experience throughout their order. David Stow got them moving with a rapid 50 retired, before veteran David Bridges added a steady 18 retired, guiding the hosts to 74 without loss at drinks after 18 overs.
The breakthrough came thanks to a change of bowling. Young debutant Sam Lovett made an immediate impact, taking two wickets - both bowled - and was unlucky not to claim a third after a dropped chance. The Glens bowlers and fielders showed great commitment throughout, highlighted by Anas Tanveer, who claimed a wicket but sportingly called the young batter back in the true R&D spirit. Arbroath closed on 158 for 2 from their 35 overs.
The chase began with intent. Rahman Tawheedi looked to attack early, keeping the run rate high before falling in the fourth over. The momentum continued as Govind Singh played fluently and looked set for his retirement milestone, only to be bowled for 49 with the score at 87 for 2 in the 12th over.
From there, Muhammad Tayyiub took control, batting with composure and retiring on 51, anchoring the innings beautifully. As wickets fell around him, the game tightened, but it was left to debutant Sam Lovett to finish what he started. Showing maturity beyond his years, he guided the chase home - sealing victory with a match‑winning boundary over mid‑on, taking Glens to 160 for 8 in the 28th over.
A memorable debut outing, played in the right spirit, and capped with a win. A huge thank‑you to Arbroath for their hospitality and for setting the perfect tone for R&D cricket.
