Glenrothes Cricket Club played their first ever Eastern Premier League game in the club’s history at Broughty Ferry today against Forfarshire Cricket Club. An historical day for Glenrothes CC and the culmination of hard work over the years for all those involved with the club. Last season, Forfarshire finished 5th in the Eastern Premier League and also won the 2015 Murgitroyd National T20 competition.
On a bright and sunny day, the game was delayed for half an hour to deal with some damp areas of the playing area because of the wet weather over the past couple of days.
The Glenrothes team made two changes to last week. With Robbie Wright away on holiday and Scott Lucas captaining the 2nd XI this season, in came Keegan Rawling, a promising South African to play as our overseas amateur and also Rizwan Akbar, the overseas professional again this year for Glenrothes.
The toss was won by Forfarshire and Glenrothes were asked to bat on a damp pitch. Glenrothes found batting hard work and were all out for 126 in the 40th over of the innings. The main contributors were opening batsman Chris Greaves (60), Keegan Rawling (15) and Graham Dodds (16) not out. Forfarshire used seven bowlers, with former Glenrothes player Graeme Beghin the pick of their bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 9 runs off 7 overs.
It was then the turn of Glenrothes to take the field. Rizwan Akbar and Kenny Crichton opened the bowling with the first wicket eventually falling with the score on 52. The Forfarshire opener Craig Wallace was particularly aggressive from the first ball and was eventually dismissed for 68 in 67 balls. Forfarshire passed the Glenrothes total of 126 with the loss of 3 wickets in the 16th over.
Next week’s league game is against Falkland at Gilvenbank and there is a T20 Fife Cup game against Freuchie on Wednesday at Gilvenbank starting at 6pm.
