Return to competitive cricket ends in defeat

Glenrothes made the short trip to Scroggie Park, Fife, for bragging rights for Fife Cricketers Using Pyjamas in a T20 match today.

Falkland won the toss and invited Glenrothes to bat first. The early loss of Andy Mudie, which to most seemed an above waist no-ball, brought Joe Burton and skipper Ian Green together to rebuild. Both batted with focus though found runs hard to come by. Though the 6th over (from young Jennings, who was unlucky to be struck with the jitters) saw 14 balls bowled, with Joe dropped by the juggling keeper Meikle within it.

Ian also choppped up a catching chance, though three Falkland fielders all stared at each other to leave it untouched. But on 26 for 1 from 8 overs, it was Joe who was next to go, attempting to attack Ben Morris (playing for Falkland) but his attempt at doing the splits couldn't get him back in the crease before being stumped.

Greg Morris negotiated the next four balls from son Ben and struck a couple of hard shots for no success, before being run out with an excellent direct hit from Chambers in the covers, then soon followed by Paul Culleton (unluckily bowled from a drag-on) to leave Glenrothes on 39 for 4 from 13.

Jordan Smith and Kenny Crichton offered brief cameos with a couple of powerful hits, but couldn't kick on and along with Brian Morris all lost their wickets quickly. It was to be Charlie Burton who achieved some "red ink" to see Glenrothes through to 69 for 9 from their 20 overs.

Knowing that tight bowling and focused fielding was needed from all, Glenrothes opened the bowling with Jordan Smith and Kenny Crichton. The green-pitch wasn't to Kenny's liking as his first ball was a full-bunger dispatched for 4 and then followed up in his second over with some more buffet for the Falkland openers Sloan and Robertston.

The early hit outs giving the batters confidence (though public rebuking for Sloan who was called one-short having run three), they were from there keen to push for runs of every ball. Skipper Ian Green rotated his bowlers around but no one was able to settle. Robertson in particular looked to strike the ball hard, Brian Morris getting a hand to a zinger in the covers couldn't stop it going for four but it's still a drop in the book.

Glenrothes allowed a couple of other half-chances in the outfield to go by and turned a couple of ones in to twos, but retained enthusiasm to the end. Well, almost... Ravi Kiran, making his debut, was brought on to bowl and with scores tied saw Sloan mishit a catch to Jordan Smith at long-on, though wasn't able to hang on and allow Falkland to claim victory by 10 wickets in the 8th over.

Great to see both clubs back out playing, and we wish Falkland well in any future games they play with other Fife Clubs Under Pretence of cricket.
