Glenrothes 1st XI travelled North on Saturday to play Stoneywood Dyce 2nd XI in the Strathmore and Perthshire Cricket Union (SPCU) Division 1.
Having won the toss, Glens skipper Qasim Ahmed looked to the misty skies and could only envisage a swinging ball and so invited the home team to bat first.
Muhammad Osama was to make the breakthrough with the score on 16 as Henry MacKenzie sliced a catch to skipper Ahmed at point. Ahmed was to soon follow this up with the second wicket as he trapped number three Adrian Merry with the score on 21.
Opener Tariq Butt was batting time and found good support from Ryan Williams, though the latter was to play round a straight ball from Mayank Sautiyal to be bowled for 23.
At 54 for three in the 9th over, the game was to turn as wickets were regularly lost. Kevin Le Roux being the first instigator as he first saw Travis Dauth chip a catch to Osama at mid-off then he himself took a catch to dismiss opener Butt for a patient 11 from 65 balls off the bowling of Anas Tanveer.
68 for 5 soon became 69 for 8 as Ben Krzyzanowski trapped Senthil Palaninathan for three and then saw Michael Hood squeeze a catch down the leg-side to keeper Sufyan Ahmed for a duck two balls later. Two wickets became three in the over as Mayank Sautiyal had a narrow miss for run-out at the non-strikers end but the ball bounced through to the keepers end to hit the stumps with Pratap Thimaiah given out for not grounding his bat over the line.
Veteran Stuart Reid was to show the way of positive intent, striking a number of good shots which will have helped raise the confidence of his young partner Tristan Finch. He had looked confident, though a leg-cutter from Krzyzanowski was to see him bowled with the score on 82.
This brought fellow youngster Charlie Fraser to the crease, and he was to provide good support for Reid. But the push to score boundaries was to eventually as Reid edged Sautiyal to third-man for Muhammad Talha to take a well judged catch - Stoneywood Dyce bowled out for 107 in the 29th over.
Glenrothes openers Muhammad Tayyiub and Sufyan Ahmed started strongly, though not without a few nervy shots from both. But the runs soon started coming, Tayyiub taking the more sedate approach but accumulating runs faster than Ahmed.
With the score on 64 from 8 overs, a change of bowler was to bring immediate reward for the home side, as Henry MacKenzie trapped Tayyiub LBW for 24.
Reyon Thomas came in at number three, and he was to enjoy the view from the non-strikers end as Ahmed began to open his shoulders and hit a number of lusty blows. Ahmed was to finish 60 not out, as two wides in succession saw Glenrothes claim the win in the 14th over.
A good win on the road, though Stoneywood Dyce 2nd XI were obviously hit by some unavailabilities in their side. A number of dropped catches will have disappointed the Glens team, and will hope for improvement as they welcome Forfarshire 2nd XI to Gilvenbank Park next Saturday.
