Having beaten Largo in the first round-robin fixture in The Crickety Strathmore and Perthshire Cricket Union (SPCU) Trophy, Glenrothes welcomed a strong Falkland 2nd XI to Gilvenbank Park on Thursday night hoping to secure top spot.
Glens skipper Qasim Ahmad won the toss and chose to bat first, though four ducks and three single-figure scores meant a sub-par score was achieved.
Sufyan Ahmed (17) tried to hit out at the top of the innings, but never got the pace of the bowlers. Mayank Sautiyal (22) came in too low at number six showed promise but too much damage was already done in the top order by that point. Huge credit though goes to Govind Singh (38) batting with confidence at number three.
Falkland showed their experience and knowledge throughout, with their fielding a stand-out including some well judged catches - the one-handed grab by Ryan Hepburn stood out.
Glenrothes were bowled out for 99 in the 17th over.
Falkland openers Devon May and Michael Hibberd batted confidently, though some loose bowling and gaps in the field allowed them to build a half century partnership.
It was to be Sautiyal to make the breakthrough as he bowled May for 28. Anas Tanveer was to get the second wicket as he took an excellent one--handed return catch of his own bowling.
Falkland 72 for 2 after 15 overs at this stage, though Julian de Jager coming in at number four upped the scoring rate as he finished 23 not out alongside the same score for opener Hibberd, as Falkland claimed the victory in the 18th over.
A deserved victory for Falkland who showed their class with a number of players with significant Eastern Premier League experience, which hopefully the Glens players will have learned a lot from - particularly positive running between the wickets, fielding positions and general fielding skills.
We now await the result between Largo and Falkland in July to see who the tops the group to progress to Finals Day.
