Brave Glenrothes Denied in Dramatic Finish at Doo’cot

Glenrothes 139 a/o v 140-9 Perth Doo'cot

Glenrothes fell agonisingly short in a tense one‑wicket defeat to Perth Doo’cot in today’s SPCU North East Championship clash at Doo’cot Park, a match that swung dramatically several times before the home side scraped over the line.

Perth won the toss and chose to field, a decision that paid early dividends when Glenrothes lost Govind Singh cheaply. But opener Sufyan Ahmed counter‑attacked superbly, putting the home bowlers under pressure and lifting the fifty partnership inside 11 overs. At 63 for 1, Glenrothes looked well set.

That optimism evaporated quickly. A flurry of aggressive strokes brought a collapse to 71 for 5, leaving the innings in trouble.

Yasar Arfat and Jerin Matthew rebuilt with purpose, though Matthew was unfortunate to fall LBW for 17 just as the pair looked settled. From there, wickets continued to tumble around Arfat, who held the innings together with a composed and unbeaten 44*.

Glenrothes were eventually dismissed for 139 in the 43rd over.

Skipper Qasim Ahmad made an immediate impact, bowling big‑hitter Asif Naeem for just one. He soon trapped Fawad Ali LBW, setting the tone for a fierce Glenrothes defence of their modest total.

The spell of the day came from Mayank Sautiyal, who produced a brilliant burst of four wickets in four overs, moving the ball dangerously and ripping through the Perth top order. His spell left Perth reeling at 53 for 6, but it came at a cost—Sautiyal left the field shortly after with a hand injury, a turning point in the match.

Perth’s hopes were revived by Johannes Van Ee, whose rapid 37 shifted momentum back toward the home side before Anas Tanveer bowled him to keep Glenrothes alive.

With the game in the balance, Skipper Ahmed cycled through his bowlers and landed with his wicketkeeper brother Sufyan Ahmad - and he duly delivered as he struck in his very first over, bowling Durani for 4. He then claimed the key wicket of opener young Aaban Owais, who had anchored the innings with a well‑made 42. At 137 for 9, Perth were still three runs short.

But home skipper Rory Pennycook held his nerve, striking the winning runs to seal a nail‑biting victory for Perth Doo’cot.

This match echoed Glenrothes’ previous NEC outing: batting - patchy, with moments of promise but not enough sustained focus; bowling & fielding - full of heart, discipline, and genuine threat. There is clear evidence that Glenrothes can compete with the top sides, and once the batting unit finds consistency, results like this may start falling their way.
