Glenrothes welcomed top‑of‑the‑table Dundee HSFP to Gilvenbank Park in the SPCU North East Championship, and after a week of heavy rain and a sweating pitch under covers, a difficult surface looked inevitable. Dundee HSFP were understandably pleased to win the toss and bowl - but Glenrothes’ openers Govind Singh and Sufyan Ahmed had other ideas.
Singh and Ahmed settled quickly, putting on a composed half‑century stand before Singh fell caught‑and‑bowled to the impressive Bakhtyar Saqiwal for 14. That brought Yasar Arfat to the crease, who played with maturity and patience as Ahmed accelerated at the other end.
Ahmed’s run‑a‑ball 67 set the tone, and when Mayank Sautiyal joined Arfat, the pair pushed the score to 150 in the 38th over. Sautiyal then shifted gears superbly, striking a fluent 66, while Ikram Ullah added a valuable 32. Both fell near the end, but not before Glenrothes hammered 104 runs in the final 12 overs, closing on an excellent 254 for 8.
Dundee HSFP began cautiously. Andrew Lowdon soaked up 22 balls for just a single before being bowled by Bimal Balan, with Singh taking the catch. Youngster Ansh Pavan and overseas players Alex Parthenis rebuilt steadily, taking the visitors past 100 in the 28th over.
The breakthrough came from Anas Tanveer, bowling Pavan for 39 - a relief for Glenrothes after a spell of sloppy fielding and dropped chances. Arfat then struck the key blow, removing Parthenis for 43 thanks to a safe catch from Muhammad Osama at long‑on. When Sami Ejaz was bowled soon after, Dundee HSFP were 133-4 in the 36th over, needing 122 from 14 overs with the match finely poised.
Anubav Chakravarty added a brisk 21 but always looked vulnerable, eventually bowled by Tanveer. That left overseas player James Schimanski with the responsibility of steering the chase, but despite some powerful strokes, he found fielders with frustrating regularity. As the required rate climbed, wickets tumbled - including a run‑out and late strikes from Ullah and Sautiyal - leaving Dundee HSFP short on 213 for 8.
A superb 41‑run victory for Glenrothes - their first win of the NEC season after several competitive performances. The batting showed depth, the bowling held firm, and the team finally converted pressure into points.
But the lessons remain clear: too many extras and sloppy fielding kept Dundee HSFP in the contest longer than necessary. Still, this was a statement win against the league leaders and a platform to build on.
