Glenrothes made the short journey to Freuchie yesterday for the latest round of the SPCU North East Championship, and for the first hour it looked as though skipper Qasim Ahmad had judged conditions well. Winning the toss and choosing to bowl, he watched Mayank Sautiyal tear through the Freuchie top order with three early wickets, reducing the hosts to 55 for 3.
While wickets fell around him, Luan Ryke held the innings together with calm, controlled batting. He lost partner Ieuan Ward to Yasar Arfat as Freuchie approached 100, and moments later suffered the misfortune of being run out for 35 - a mix‑up with incoming batter Musakhar Hussain leaving Freuchie wobbling at 105 for 5.
Hussain, however, made amends. He defended stubbornly, punished anything loose, and anchored the middle order with a composed innings that repeatedly halted Glenrothes’ momentum. Anas Tanveer bowled an excellent spell (2 for 14 from 4 overs) before being removed surprisingly early, while Sautiyal returned to claim a fourth wicket and finish with 4 for 46 from 10.
The final twist came from Freuchie’s last pair. Graeme Christie and Michael Sheeran added a valuable 27 runs, pushing the total to 223 all out in the 48th over, Christie last man out bowled by Bimal Nalupurakkal Balan for 15.
Freuchie’s quick Robbie Wright, already making headlines this season, showed exactly why. His opening burst dismantled the Glenrothes top order: bowling Govind Singh, taking an excellent caught and bowl of Arfat and then with his team in trouble Sufyan Ahmed inexplicably going for the big shot with the ball on the stumps and bowled.
At 5 for 3, Glenrothes were in deep trouble. Ali Tahir Chaudhry and Muhammad Osama rebuilt with patience and good shot selection. Osama punished anything short or wide, but his innings ended on 17 when Jeandre Niemann trapped him LBW. Sautiyal soon followed in identical fashion, leaving Glenrothes 46 for 5.
Jerin Matthew brought authority to the crease, punching confidently off the back foot and keeping the scoreboard moving. But another mix‑up cost Glenrothes dearly - Chaudhry run out for 29. Qasim Ahmad followed soon after, and at 84 for 7, the visitors were staring at defeat.
Tanveer and Balan added much‑needed stability, batting with increasing confidence and dragging Glenrothes back into the contest. But the return of young seamer Ryan McLaughlin proved decisive:first taking a skied caught and bowled to dismiss Balan for 21 then shortly afterwards Tanveer hit to leg for Graeme Christie to take a good diving catch to dismiss him for 19.
The innings closed on 131 all out, Glenrothes well short of the target but not without moments of genuine competitiveness.
Glenrothes will leave Freuchie knowing they were never completely outplayed. They bowled well in spells, built partnerships under pressure, and showed resilience. But slack fielding, unlucky decisions and poor shot selection combined to create a gap too wide to close. Glenrothes will know that cutting out self‑inflicted errors is the next step if they want to turn competitive performances into wins.
